Dear GUSD Families,
I hope you are doing well and that you enjoyed your long weekend. I sincerely appreciate your continued patience, encouragement and Glendora Grit, as we work to reopen our schools. As promised, I write you tonight to confirm our phased return to in-person instruction.
Last night, we received notice from the LA County Department of Public Health and Dr. Duardo, County Superintendent of Schools, that the county COVID-19 numbers had significantly decreased and that we had been under 25 cases per 100,000 for over 5 consecutive days. This afternoon, the adjusted case rate for L.A. county was posted at 20.0.
With that news came the approval for TK-6 elementary schools to reopen (some elementary schools have a Grade 6), with or without an approved waiver, if the district had submitted the COVID Safety Reopening Plan to the state and county more than seven days prior to reopening. We submitted our
plan to the state and county when we applied for the Governor’s proposed reopening on January 26th. This approval means we are able to proceed with our phased reopening plan. The dates for return are listed below:
∙ Small Cohort Intensive Needs: Thursday, Feb. 18
∙ TK/K Cohort B - Thursday, Feb. 18
∙ TK/K Cohort A – Monday, Feb. 22
∙ 1st Cohort B - Thursday, Feb. 25
∙ 1st Cohort A – Monday, Mar. 1
∙ 2nd Cohort B – Thursday, Mar. 4
∙ Conference Week – Mar. 8-12
∙ 2nd Cohort A – Monday, Mar. 15
∙ 3rd Cohort B – Thursday, Mar. 18
∙ 3rd Cohort A – Monday, Mar. 22
∙ 4th/5th Cohort B – Thursday, April 8
∙ 4th/5th Cohort A – Monday, April 12
In the meantime, our team has worked diligently to ensure the safety of all staff and students. Our business services and custodial staff have worked around the clock to prepare your classrooms and other school facilities for return, closely following all California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) safety guidelines and health orders. This preparation included LACDPH site inspections at each of our sites and a comprehensive review of our HVAC systems and replacement of our filters to meet or exceed the state guidelines, using HEPA filter grade level 14 (level 13 is hospital-grade). We are also fully stocked with PPE for students and staff.
It is also critical that our families do their part to closely follow the attached safety protocols. Every family that decides to return their child for in-person learning commits to following the safety protocols linked below, including masking, social-distancing and handwashing to the best of their ability in school and in their personal lives to support the safest possible environment for their child, all other students and staff. Click here for the GUSD Reopening Safety Protocols
Additionally, all symptomatic students will be able to get free COVID-19 tests through our GUSD COVID-19 Testing Program on Wednesdays from noon to 4:00 p.m., beginning in the upcoming weeks. Detailed information will be forthcoming.
We look forward to reopening our elementary schools and small cohorts, and will continue working to ensure our students at every grade level are able to return as soon as permitted. Have a wonderful evening!
